The Roundup Beyond UPDATED

Rather than pummel you all with daily updates on minutae I'm planning on doing once/twice weekly groupings of Beyond news.

The starter here has to be those single sheet posters of the main cast (including Jaylah and Krall). The eagle-eyed will have noted that the Sulu, Scotty and Uhura ones were pulled when fans noticed the mirrored delta insignias on the uniforms but they were back up within a matter of hours airbrushed and correct. We are a fussy bunch aren't we?

I do like the fact that they've incorporated the delta into the overall design with each person having a distinctive colour too. Also you do get a much better look at the alien ship design that features so fleetingly in the two trailers to date and appear to be the cause of the Enterprise's demise. Certainly they have been a prominent element of the lead-up to this point and I would think we'll be seeing an edition of the Starships Collection with it in relatively soon.

This campaign is a lot more vibrant than either the '09 or '13 promotions and I hope it's an indication of a more optimistic movie. It's certainly giving off positive vibes if nothing else and the choice to do something different seems to have gone down well from what I've been hearing.

This single-sheet concept is a similar strategy to what was run during Into Darkness and we've even had an animated poster in the retro-style of The Motion Picture. Again if you think back to 2013 and the reboot sequel there was an animated version of the first Khan poster with London on fire. Have they run out of new ideas for this campaign? Are we likely to see a viral website pop up or will that be skipped this time out?

We have seen some more promo materials drop including an extensive range of Funko Pop! figures including the whole crew, Krall and Jaylah plus two extras including Kirk in Survival Suit and another which has not been revealed as yet (number 355 if you're keeping track). Rumour has it that it might be Spock in his Franklin uniform but could it be something more integral to the movie that they want to keep hidden until its release...?

So with new posters we also received two new TV spots. Shame of the matter here is that there is zero new footage contained within either and therefore utterly pointless talking about them. For note one was spotted during the England versus Russia game on Friday 10th June but so far that seems to be it. They exist is about as much as I can say and at least Paramount are promoting the film which has just about a month and a half to go until it premieres. Happy days!

You can check them out below:

Perhaps a more interesting point to come out of the news surrounding Beyond is that Karl Urban had to be convinced to return for this third movie. It's hard to imagine anyone else fitting into the team after building relationships through the previous two movies but y'know, it might have happened. It also seems that Justin Lin had a very positive effect on the movie, making Urban realise it was worth sticking around for one more time.

Apparently Beyond will continue to develop the Spock/Uhura relationship as suggested in a chat with Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana recently plus attune the reboots more to the characterisation and feel that was part of The Original Series (doesn't that feel like cross-purposes?) but I'd rather be judging that once I see the finished product on the screen in just over one month's time. One thing that is emerging however is that we will see a very different crew and ship to what we saw in Into Darkness. Instead of being fresh-faced, they're worn out, tired and in need of a break after two and a half years of exploring the final frontier.

So that's all. Seriously, this is the most under-the-radar promotion campaign I've ever seen for a Star Trek movie. As I noted on the podcast it could be some sort of reverse psychology thing and actually the point is we're talking about it more because there's so little to go on. At least it'll keep us all guessing right up to the closing credits, right?!

UPDATE

Ok so yesterday we got a cracking new photo set on the bridge of the Enterprise looking from the view screen back at the bridge. There's a lot more blue tone going on with this bridge than I remember from Into Darkness but that's not a bad thing.

Why am I getting all excited about this? Take note that the bridge does look fairly unchanged from the set we saw in Into Darkness, look at the characters included here. For one there's no Scotty on the bridge and secondly there are a few new alien faces In there. There's a discernible new alien in red to the left BUT the real question is, who is the alien directly behind Sulu?

Look more closely and you'll see that the alien isn't wearing a standard Starfleet uniform.  In fact it bears no Starfleet insignia and although its the same colour as the survival suit it has black shoulder colourings rather than the gold that Kirk and Chekov sport. Interesting that this is the only person in the shot wearing this outfit. One for us to think about perhaps. From memory I think this guy actually turns up for a split second in the trailer but not in this costume.

Have you spotted any new info on Star Trek Beyond? What do you think it's all about?

Destination Star Trek 2016: The Official Announcement

Here it is!

Less than a week ago we were given the news that the 50th anniversary would see a Star Trek event on UK shores. As of 12 noon today (2/2/16) we now know a little bit more about what to expect from the event. Below I've reproduced the official press release but let's break it down paragraph by paragraph...

LONDON, February 02, 2016Destination Star Trek Europe, the premier Star Trek fan event in Europe, will once again open its doors to thousands of Star Trek enthusiasts from across the universe for a three-day celebration of Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary. Set for October 7-9 at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, England, Destination Star Trek Europe will pay tribute to the characters and stories that have inspired generations of fans, joining a year of celebrations in honour of this milestone year for the franchise.

No big shock on the venue since William Shatner announced it would be Birmingham in a tweet last week. The NEC is the obvious venue and offers a lot of space for the event. Good choice for the three days!

Destination Star Trek Europe, under license by CBS Consumer Products, will offer fans the opportunity to meet cast and crew, explore interactive exhibits, learn about Star Trek’s impact on science, space and technology, and enjoy parties fit for a golden anniversary.

The legendary William Shatner (Captain Kirk), will headline the event and be joined by Christopher Lloyd (Commander Kruge), Walter Koenig (Chekov), Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), Alexander Siddig (Dr. Julian Bashir), Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax) and Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax). Additional guests will be revealed in the coming months.

OK... so to the guests. We have The Original Series covered off by Shatner and Koenig (no doubt promo'ing Renegades too), The Next Generation represented by Frakes and Sirtis, Deep Space Nine by Siddig, Farrell (again a Renegades link) and de Boer as well as a special appearance by The Search for Spock guest star Lloyd  (what have they done to his eyes on the DST site?) - but no news on anyone SO FAR from Voyager or Enterprise. Note too we're getting double Dax for the event! Could those guests to be announced include another four captains perhaps? Maybe some behind the scenes guys such as Rick Sternbach and Mike Okuda? New series cast....???? Aside from Christopher Lloyd though it's nothing super unbelievable so far.

There will also be four stages -  Enterprise,  Excelsior,  Voyager and Enterprise-D hosting talks across the weekend including All Hail the 50 Year March of the Klingons and 50 Years Not Out: Celebrating Star Trek's Many Reinventions.

In addition to autographs, photos and panels, fans will be able to take command of the bridge on the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 or NCC-1701-D, investigate a Borg hive, take charge of a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, explore a shuttlecraft, and see original props and costumes in the Destination Star Trek Museum.

WOW. That's some pretty cool attractions. I'm a sucker for sets and props so that's going to be awesome to experience. The shuttle is one I'm very interested in seeing - and which one will it be? I suspect that getting a pic on one of those mock-ups might cost a couple of quid so take some cash along for these and for those all-important cast shots and autographs.

Checking out the site there is going to be a themed Klingon zone along with a gaming area and two parties on the Friday and Saturday night for fans to attend. The museum is promising items seen previously at Destination Star Trek such as scripts, Borg drones and Odo face masks as well as some surprise new items.

Tickets are now available at www.DestinationStarTrek.com

No brainer. Go and book. Tickets start from £29 for a single day through to the four packages of Lieutenant,  Commander, Captain and Admiral each offering a different set of increasingly impressive options.

“For five decades, Star Trek has influenced the world around us through its voyages to the Final Frontier,” said event organiser, Mark Woollard. “Destination Star Trek Europe will honour the series’ impact and celebrate its legions of fans that are inspired to boldly go where no one has gone before.”

Star Trek celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016. Born from the mind of Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series debuted on September 8, 1966 and aired for three seasons -- a short run that belied the influence it would have for generations. Launching the careers of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, the series also broke new ground in storytelling and cultural mores providing a progressive look at topics including race relations, global politics, the environment, and more. It spawned five more television series and 13 feature films spanning the course of half a century.

Nice few cliches of the associated phrases and the like here. Bit of background for the uninitiated but for most readers we'll be skipping over the generic background looking for any further info on what to expect at this point in the release. No news on if this is going to have any links into Beyond and the JJ-verse or if we're going to be given any teasers for the upcoming TV series in 2017. Actually, it's pretty mute in regards to anything from 2009 onwards...

Beyond its impact on the entertainment landscape, Star Trek has also inspired some of the greatest minds steering the direction of our modern world and sparking the biggest technological advancements of our time such as the cell phone, universal translator, smart watch, tablet, sonogram, and countless other inventions. Those who cite Star Trek as an influence on their lives include Stephen Hawking, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Elon Musk, and countless others.

Yep, Star Trek had cultural impact! Few nice name drops but are any of them going to guest?! No news on that.

Destination Star Trek Europe is organised by Massive Events, in association with Showmasters and Media 10.

OK....not the biggest announcement. It confirms a few guests and a few of the attractions but nothing about what stands, businesses etc are going to be on show for us. Will Timelines be there? Can we expect to get hands on with some upcoming models from the Starships Collection? Are there going to be some exclusive screenings during the three day event?

The next few months will unquestionably keep seeing bits of information drip onto the event page which is now open to buy your tickets. Get to it!

What are you looking forward to at Destination Star Trek Europe? Which guests do you want to meet and what will you be heading for?

Destination Star Trek 2016: The Wishlist So Far

Hurrah for Destination Star Trek!!!!

It's back in the UK two years after its last visit and on February 2nd, exactly 24 hours from the time I'm posting this, we'll be able to find out a few tantalising details of what's in store. Also seems that #DST is making it's way to Birmingham rather than London - big twist there if the reveal from Mr Shatner on Twitter was anything to go by! Roll on 12noon TOMORROW for our first announcements.

But,  just as we did before, let's have a think about what we want to see at this - unquestionably - huge event. Well, OK, it's the second biggest of the year in the UK after First Contact Day(!)

1. The Original Series Cast

Whether or not everyone wants to be in the same room as Shatner is always something worth a few lines of debate but it's 50 years and surely differences can be put aside for three days?  If not what about getting together as many guest stars as funds might allow for this three-dayer?

2. The Captains

We're not just talking the five from TV but also Chris Pine and - potentially - one other.  They're all worthy of being there as the leaders of their respective crews.

3. Preview of Star Trek 2017

When will we be able to refer to it other than by release year? This would be the perfect time to give us a trailer or two and maybe get some of the cast over for their first taste of fandom.  Maybe a little too much of a trial by fire but we gotta see it sometime and an unveiling at this event would send UK fans wild. Could we get our first footage? First sneak peeks of the new ship? We can dream/hope/pray (delete as applicable).

4. The Star Trek Encyclopaedia and the Okudas

The biggest Star Trek book launch of the year and it would be only fitting for those behind it to be at the UK's biggest Star Trek event in 2016. It's been a long time coming for an updated version of the ultimate reference guide to the future and I think it's a book that's on every fan's must have list for this year.

5. Love for the Fan Series

Can we have some time to appreciate the work of Continues and Phase II/New Voyages and more at DST 2016? Screenings, fan panels etc would be good to see as these guys and gals have been flying the flag for Star Trek since it went off air in 2005.

6. Media

Rumour has it that at the 2014 event there was a media booth for us bloggers, vloggers and errant media beavers to use but no-one knew! Can we have some more info on this as I think it'll get a lot more use in 2016 - I could certainly find a use!!! As for a media session, it would be great to see if we could get a lot of us into a room for a chat!

7. Official Starships

Boys and toys moment as I would like to think Ben and the Eaglemoss team will keep a few gems secret for reveal at DST. I'm hoping he'll take along the specials from Beyond - and we know there are three ships from that and one of those is the Enterprise. But here's a thought I didn't drop into the piece on the Franklin - how do we know that he's talking about the Enterprise from the first two reboots?!?! (think about it....we know Ben doesn't like doing ships with minor changes).

8. Idris Elba

Now this would be a galactic coup? I know we've already spoken about getting Pine along to get the stage filled with all six screen captains (to date) but how about getting the villain of the summer Star Trek movie up for a Q&A with the fans? He is a Brit so this would just be a little trip down the road for one of our finest.

OK, so these are all just things I would like to see but who knows what's coming and who is coming. Will there be a full series cast reunion? Is it going to be Deep Space Nine rather than The Original Series? Will we get the whole crew from Beyond? How about a chat with Alex Kurtzman? We could go on...and I suspect after tomorrow we will!

What - or who - do you want to see at Destination Star Trek 2016?

This is Sabotage: The Beyond Trailer is Here

If you were thinking that the Enterprise deserved an easy ride after the battering it received in Into Darkness you'd better look away now.

Today Paramount launched the brand spanking new Star Trek Beyond trailer which is due to be unleashed in cinemas this week accompanying some small budget flick called Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Fairly logical really since both movies have the influence of JJ Abrams upon them.

Whether this trailer was going to be released today is uncertain since some unscrupulous so-and-so dropped a German-dubbed version onto the net early this morning. While it was promptly removed by order of Paramount Pictures, the official version wasn't long behind it to go live.

But what does this 90 second snapshot tell us about the third reboot movie? A fair bit and it does mean that some of those sneaky set pictures make more sense. Backed by the Jim Kirk favourite from the Beastie Boys, the first trailer focuses very heavily on four crew characters; Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty with "cameos" from Sulu, Uhura and Chekov. Plus we get our first good look at Idris Elba in full alien makeup and Sophie Boutella kicking some arse.

We got no ship, no crew...
how we gonna get out of this one?
- Kirk

I'd suggest that the initial clips of Kirk and Scotty on a shuttle are from later on in the movie after some pretty catastrophic events. Kirk's narrative indicates that an unspecified number of the officers/main cast are separated from the rest of the crew after the Enterprise is attacked. At first I thought that the shots of the starship were in an asteroid field however on closer look it seems that the Enterprise is being attacked by a swarm of small fighter-like ships which in turn are responsible for tearing the warp nacelles from their pylons and the ship to be evacuated.

Importantly we see both Kirk and Scotty exiting their escape pods in a forested area and in a rocky desert expanse respectively. I think we can take it that this is the same planet since set shots have shown the pair to be together at some point I would put later in the film (plus the shuttle bit the trailer opened with). In the case of Kirk we get his perspective inside the escape pod as the Enterprise saucer spirals away from him. Kinda reminds me of those scenes of the Constitution Class ship plummeting to Earth in Beyond's predecessor. It also confirms that the pieces of saucer section we saw constructed in Dubai were indeed from the Enterprise.

We will find hope in the impossible
- Spock

What does make this movie seem more in tune with the original series is the pairing of Spock and McCoy as they are shown struggling across the rocky wasteland. The pair, with Spock injured are cornered by alien craft (potentially the same as those which attacked the Enterprise) at which point the Vulcan is beamed out by a Starfleet transporter after Bones has just had his fear eased that he won't die alone; Well that's just typical.

I suspect that what will incense fans however are the fast-paced shots of one away-team-kitted Captain Kirk launching a dirt bike across some sort of alien encampment which is as yet unspecified. It does match the set we saw being built in Vancouver but its purpose is not clear.

Let's hope this doesn't get messy!
- Scotty

Cue Sophie Boutella's arrival slicing and dicing her way through a couple of alien creatures in the forest area where, I'd suggest, Kirk landed his pod. In the shots that follow you can just make Boutlella's unnamed character out fighting at that same alien encampment - could she be helping Kirk to either escape from the surface or lead a rescue mission? Is she coming to Kirk's aid or vice versa? Plus there's a fleeting shot of a third character standing alone who might be the one played by Joe Taslim (shot below) More on that rescue mission theory in a sec. You don't get that kind of pan-in shot if you're an extra.

Now finally we get to see Elba in full makeup looking something of a cross between a Reman and Ivan Ooze from the 90's Power Rangers movie. Key here is that he appears to be on the Enterprise. SO here's the thought - the attack on the ship is led by this guy who then captures the ship and takes the crew off to some form of prison camp. That would fit since we later see a long train of Starfleet yellows, blues and reds trudging through a sandy quarry-like setting under armed guard. A place where at least Sulu and Uhura are threatened by their captors.

We do see Kirk taking a kicking from the Elba character again seemingly onboard the Enterprise as Boutella reveals that she knows why they (Kirk etc) are here - why they are all here.

This is where it begins, Captain...This is where the frontier pushes back!
- ? (Elba)

Now what I also spotted is that we are likely to end up with the end of the film or at least some climatic sequence taking place on Earth under attack by Elba's alien race (below). Exactly why is suggested from Elba's quote here - the Federation has stretched out on the five year mission and it seems that there are those who are not too keen on their exploration of that frontier.

Lin's direction is a lot faster-paced, it seems tighter, brighter and a ton more action-orientated than I even felt from the Into Darkness trailer with explosions, bike stunts, one-on-one combat and actually, very little space-based events if the scenes here are to go by. Even his credit on the trailer makes not of his work on Fast and Furious and the addition of the backing track just emphasise that we're going to be in for a "furious" movie and we can only hope after the controversy that was Into Darkness.

For someone who wanted to scale Scotty's role back because of his involvement with the script, Simon Pegg shows up a lot in this 84 second teaser. In fact I'd say he's going to have quite a significant role in the story since he is going to be one of the few who appear to have escaped capture during that initial crippling attack on the Enterprise. Now he has promised a return to the show's origins but will that put bums on cinema seats or are we going to see the influence of more recent blockbusters that have raked in millions? The punchy soundtrack, sharp editing and constant action suggest more in line with The Expendables than a thought-provoking Star Trek akin to The Original Series. Not that I'm going to enter a slagging match or say it's rubbish because hey, it's a trailer. Lots can change, there's a ton more to a movie than 90 seconds and this is literally just a taster and confirmation that the damn thing actually got made and finished. Fan opinion that it's s**t already is a bit harsh. It's like saying you hate the taste of jam but never tasted jam (OK, I could have thought have something a bit more provocative than that but...). Let's keep the negativity away for now and pass a more solid judgement in July 2016.

While we don't get any clear shots of the Enterprise interiors we do have some better glimpses of both the toughened away team jackets sported by Kirk, Spock and Chekov plus the redesigned standard uniforms which have an odd raised-back/lowered front collar style which we see on McCoy, Spock and Kirk during the split-second editing. They look a bit strange if not uncomfortable.

Let's not do that again...
- Kirk

The trailer closes out with Kirk and Boutella's alien character falling to the surface of the alien encampment only to be snatched by a Federation transporter beam. Could this be the same one that saves Spock earlier and leaves McCoy alone? Who's operating it?! How does this fit with the other alien worldy bits?

I'm impressed because there's a very different feel to this trailer - more humour, more character if you please and a minute and a half of new Star Trek that actually made a bit of sense in comparison to the one we received in November 2012. Do I think this is curtains for the Enterprise? Nope. Severe damage and we might not see her for a good chunk of the movie with the main cast fending for themselves and avoiding capture but I'm sceptical that Pegg would junk the starship in his first Star Trek movie script. Watch me be horribly wrong now and the A turn up at the end. Bit of a blow-out that she's getting a trouncing again...and again.

Will it have a sense of The Original Series though? Hard to tell from this and there's a teeny feel that this might have trended towards that wannabe-a-new-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy rumour we heard on the wind a while back.

It won't have given everything away; we don't know character names beyond the main cast, we don't really know the main events and the links between the worlds we're going to visit but what we can say is that this is going to be a very different experience to the last two movies. It's already splitting fans with a sizeable number of likes and dislikes but Star Trek fans are hard to please especially when it comes to anything linked to the reboots. I remain open-minded. This is one trailer, one snapshot of a two hour movie and not enough to launch a tirade at or laud praise. Maybe there's one other thing that's worth noting - I didn't spot one damned frame of lens flare in the whole trailer.

WizKids Proposes New Frontier

As regular readers will know I've become a bit of a fan/obsessive over Attack Wing.

Which made Friday's announcement from Wizkids somewhat worrying. At least initially.

It appears that in February 2016 the game manufacturer will be delivering us Star Trek: Frontiers, offering a whole new spin on the franchise through roleplay and strategy. According to the promo material that landed this weekend, it will offer something new with players beaming away teams to planet surfaces and getting a different game each time.

Apparently it's going to be a bit of a spin on Mage Knight which is not a game I'm familiar with in any way so for myself it'll be a great, unexplored experience to dive into. I suspect for those people who have played that game it's not going to be a big deal. The Venture Tile System is the piece which will probably be key in making this stand out from Attack Wing and is the element borrowed from Mage Knight. This means that every game is constructed effectively at random and therefore totally unique.

Designed by Andrew Parks (who I believe was involved with the creation of Attack Wing) and Vlaada Chvatil (Mage Knight) it seems that the game will be played out over a series of scenarios with commanders planning out away teams to further their reputations, gain experience and make fascinating new discoveries out on the final frontier.

Fortunately for those players who can't get a regular competitor to face off against the game is designed for between one and four players. Certainly a little more limiting than Attack Wing but more inclusive for anyone who wants a bit of secret practise!

Mage Knight - which is about to receive a major expansion - has been a winner for Wizkids so it's understandable that they would use its formula to create other games. In fact I think that the Venture Tile System is a really exciting prospect - just a few bits worry me if I'm honest. What also raised the Vulcan eyebrow was the backstory that players will be forming a Federation/Klingon fleet as they head through a wormhole and into battle against Romulans, Borg and whatever else WizKids choose to throw in.

For those of us that have invested in Attack Wing it seemed that January's wave could well be the last. It's probably not a co-incidence that we knew all the releases right up to the month when Frontiers will be released and nothing else. Fortunately this weekend I uncovered the news that releases are planned for at least February and March 2016 giving us waves 23 and 24. These two will give us the Sabre Class USS Montgolfier, the K'T'Inga Class IKS Amar and IRW Jazkal Bird-of-Prey followed by the USS Raven, IKS Klothos and the Warbird IRW Davoras (info via Ikon Collectibles).

All of these models have been previously available in other wings or as OP prizes over the last two years. It will be the first time that the Sabre Class and the Raven are available as retail expansions. It does appear that these later wings are recycling models with the new time token rules and we're seeing less first run ships. Not a problem really unless you're starting to develop a complex that D'Deridex Warbirds are haunting you as there have been about five variants of this one now since the starter set. At least with the announcement of these two waves, Wizkids have assured us that the two games can co-exist - at least for two months.

Have to say I'm excited by the Sabre Class, the Raven and also the Amar which will have some cool associations with The Motion Picture I suspect. The Raven is reported down as an Assimilated Vessel which indicates Federation/Borg upgrades perhaps? I have no idea what the Montgolfier will be coming with although duplications of cards from OP prizes are showing up a lot more which might suggest the well is drying up. While those competitive players won't be too thrilled, the more casual acquaintance with Attack Wing will be happy they haven'y got to spend a fortune on eBay for that elusive and essential upgrade if they do head into that territory.

Not knowing much about Mage Knight I have this strange feeling we're going to be seeing some of the miniatures from Attack Wing all over again in this new game. From images I've seen it'll also feature a lot of cards very similar to the current headline Star Trek tabletop game but how all this will pan out and be a change from Attack Wing we have yet to see as this is pretty much all we know about the next game. Could we also be seeing mini-versions of our favourite captains, first officers and engineers? Certainly the initial layout for the game seems high weighing in at $79.99 (£51.13 at current exchange rate) so there needs to be a fairly impressive launch pack to justify the cost which is double the outlay for the starter set for Attack Wing and I would surmise that additional miniatures and board pieces would be reason enough.

I have become a big fan of Attack Wing and do kick myself for coming to it later in it's life and with the announcement of Frontiers it seems like it will all be over. The forums have shown that there has been a lot to learn from WizKids current Star Trek title particularly in more appropriate costs for upgrades dependent on what they do as well as how to handle the Borg correctly among many other things. I hope that these have all been taken into account to make their next a big success.

Then again I could have this all wrong and be making a mountain out of a molehill. Frontiers is going to be more board-based than Attack Wing so the two could co-exist since the latter operates on the FlightPath system and can be played anywhere you have a large enough area. Frontiers will need specific items setting up as you can see from the image and seems a lot more "land" based which could mean we're not going to be doing a lot of space battles here. Maybe there's hope after all.

Perhaps more interesting to see is how Frontiers will fare against the Gale Force Nine hobby-themed Star Trek board game(s) that are planned to arrive in Summer 2016 and are promising (as told to startrek.com) that it will give "...a compelling gaming system that will explore all corners of the universe and bring gamers and fans alike into the world of Star Trek like nothing that’s come before."

You can sign up for updates on the Gale Force Nine titles here.

Have to say that from the gamers perspective, 2016 is looking to be very lively and the competition will be fierce. Frontiers does have the advantage of time being released in February but playability will be the ultimate factor deciding the fate of each - which one will we still be playing come New Year's Day 2017...?

Think that Attack Wing will survive a bit longer or are its days numbered? Will you be playing Frontiers? Let us know below!

Did We Miss Something? Going Beyond Wanting Worf

Last week filming actually began on Star Trek Beyond.

Not that you would have noticed. The first few days were particularly mute on a film that we also know virtually nothing about. Is it Klingons? Is it the five year mission? Will Idris Elba or Bryan Cranston be starring as villains?  Is it none of the above?!

Frankly we know zip about this film. Potentially because Simon Pegg is still writing the script (or was the last time we had word from him). At least we know that it'll be called Beyond and that it commenced filming in the Canadian National Park on June 25th. Again Trekcore has some great pics of the possible filming location including some shots of very Star Trek fake rocks as well as platforms and a notice declaring that filming of something is taking place.

The cast themselves aside from Spock and Uhura have apparently been spotted in the area and we have the report that both Quinto and Pine have signed on for a fourth voyage. Good news that at least the movies are continuing for a few more years.

I'm not going into the whole conversation over speculation but Paramount have acquired the startrekbeyond.com website from the gent behind Star Trek Uncharted (formerly Beyond) who is getting the chance to pitch his series to the Powers That Be.

What we do have is a couple of Instagram shots from Zachary Quinto getting ready to drop into character and Zoe Saldana prepping in her trailer. Then yesterday director Justin Lin dropped the first official photograph via his Twitter feed (left). So does this tell us anything about the production? Well it does confirm that they're making a third movie and that looks like some form of utility suit similar to the ones Kirk and McCoy were wearing at the beginning of Into Darkness when taking a swim back to the Enterprise

One shot you might have missed was one (via Trekcore) which purported to show the Enterprise corridors being constructed in Vancouver. This is highly speculative and could even be a pic of the corridors being built for either of the previous productions. However, we can wish.

It's a very simple logo too - no central emblem denoting department but the blue might indicate Spock (as we know Quinto has started filming) science. But frankly that's about it. Heck I hoped there would be more but concrete facts on the movie are rarer than a sterilized tribble. In a way that's great since nothing's being ruined but might it suggest that the story isn't finished and they're still working out some of the "finer" details?

I'll leave you to ponder over that one because talking of new Star Trek that Uncharted behemoth reared its head thanks to (I suspect) Michael Chang Gummelt owning a certain website name and having a very big series concept. I discussed my thoughts on a recent SFEscape Podcast and I'm not entirely comfortable with the format and the inclusion of the Stargate-like technology. I do find the exploration of a distant galaxy very intriguing and the backstory incredibly well thought out however there seem to be a lot of elements drawn from other sources and I need to be convinced more that this can still remain true to the principles of Star Trek. There is a great and varied array of characters as well as old and new races which would certainly expand and develop the franchise rather than restrain it within the 24th Century. I'd recommend casting your eyes over the site and certainly have a read of Michael's proposed pilot, Rendevous with Destiny. Which brings me neatly to another point.

One show that does seem to have that century very much at it's core is Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Worf Chronicles. Aside from being a horrendous mouthful (may well abbreviate it to TWC in future) it does have some promise as Dorn's meetings with Paramount/CBS haven't ended with a definite 'No'. Following his recent AQA on reddit, the #wewantworf movement has certainly gathered interest both for and against with a rather bizarre yet original million mini-muffin campaign on the go to push studio executives in favour of the series. Certainly it'll have a big effect on their collestrol if nothing more.

Strangely Dorn sees this as a way to flesh out the Worf character (finally) -  but hang on, didn't he get more screen time and development than any other character EVER?!

OK, probably a minor issue that (!) but as a nice selling point, former Star Trek scribe Ronald D Moore has penned a pilot and it seems a few other stories should it get picked up. I've said it before, I say it again - do we need to keep going back here? I feel that the more people ask him about what happened to it, the more it feeds the veteran Star Trek actor and in turn that fuels the fan frenzy. It's a vicious circle which might lead to a show but (saying it again) Worf's been done to death and his rather sporadic later career left many of us somewhat confused as to where he was supposed to be after the conclusion of Deep Space Nine. Always seemed to be conveniently near the Enterprise didn't he?

I praise Dorn for getting the fans excited once again and it's good to see the community hyped up about the Prime Universe but I'm still thinking false hope and that, in some ways, Uncharted might stand more of a chance because it's fresh, set far enough distant from Voyager and the rest of the franchise and offers a new perspective on Star Trek. Sure I'll gripe about some of it's ideas but didn't we do the same when The Next Generation came along in 1987? Yes is the answer and I believe that if Uncharted - which is far from perfect - were made, we'd be in a similar situation. Worf is familiar, liked but a well-explored character while Uncharted does have the unexplored, frontier edge advantage plus 100% new characters, advanced tech and new species all in the mixing pot. Overall it's a much more enticing package although it doesn't have the initial might of a former Star Trek actor to add weight. That said, earlier this year Uncharted was barely known until it was forced into the name change and now look where it is.

Maybe just having the increased interest in renewing a TV path means we're more likely to get a new series. I'd like to think so. Where from? Still open to bidders I expect.
